California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law a bill downgrading the possession of an ounce or less of marijuana from a misdemeanor to an infraction.

The bill makes possession of up-to an ounce an infraction; like a traffic ticket, punishable by a simple $100 fine and no arrest record.

The Governor said that the bill is not intended to make it easier for people to have cannabis, but instead to ease the state's financial burden of the cost of enforcing the previous policy.

"Gov. Schwarzenegger deserves credit for sparing the state's taxpayers the cost of prosecuting minor pot offenders," Gieringer said. "Californians increasingly recognize that the war on marijuana is a waste of law enforcement resources."

The new law will not take effect until January 1, 2011, and it will still remain relevant even if Proposition 19 passes.

This is all over the local news here in Vegas. As Paris Hilton would say, "That's so hot!"

MGM Resorts International is taking the heat for an intense beam of searing desert sunlight, jokingly dubbed the "death ray," that some hotel guests say poses a risk of severe burns to bathers lounging poolside. The beam is actually a concentrated reflection of solar rays bouncing off the gleaming glass facade of the concave-shaped, high-rise Vdara hotel and condominium, which opened on the Las Vegas "strip" in December.

Local media, as well as some hotel staff and guests, have come to refer to the reflection as the "death ray," but MGM Resorts officials prefer to call it a "solar convergence phenomenon."

"The refraction moves across the pool deck over a period 90 minutes," company spokesman Gordon Absher told Reuters. "It's never in the same place from day to day or week to week because the sun its changing its elevation in the sky."

[...The] concentrated sunlight remains hot enough at certain times, in certain spots, to melt plastic and singe hair, said William Pintas, 49, a Chicago lawyer and Vdara condo owner who first encountered the effect earlier after a dip in the pool.

When his head started burning, he thought it was from chemicals in the pool. [...] Pintas said he could even smell his hair starting to burn.

Wanna take bets on when CSI has a show based on this? Perhaps they should do a crossover show with 'Burn Notice'.

Police have gunned down a 100-pound mountain lion romping through Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto neighborhood blocks from Alice Waters' famed Chez Panisse restaurant.

Authorities said a neighborhood resident reported the big cat to Berkeley police and firefighters around 2 a.m. Tuesday. The animal was seen roaming through residential backyards and a church playground before officers caught up with it. Police and state wildlife officials quickly deemed the animal a threat to public safety, and officers were given the OK to shoot it. An officer killed it with a shotgun at about 3:30 a.m.

NEW YORK — The furor over how close is too close to ground zero for a planned Islamic center and mosque has raised a simple question nine years after Sept. 11: Where exactly is ground zero?

The lines marking the site of the 2001 terror attacks change depending on which New Yorker, 9/11 family member and American you talk to. Even those who know it best can't agree on its boundaries. Tourists who come to snap pictures outside of a busy construction site often aren't sure that they're there.

Andrew Slawsky, 22, stood outside the proposed mosque and Islamic center two blocks north of the World Trade Center site. He said ground zero isn't here.

'To me, ground zero is any site that was destroyed or damaged on 9/11 – mostly the hole in the ground,' Slawsky said, referring to the ruins of the trade center towers.

Exactly a century after rumours of his death turned out to be entirely accurate, one of Mark Twain's dying wishes is at last coming true: an extensive, outspoken and revelatory autobiography which he devoted the last decade of his life to writing is finally going to be published.

The creator of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and some of the most frequently misquoted catchphrases in the English language left behind 5,000 unedited pages of memoirs when he died in 1910, together with handwritten notes saying that he did not want them to hitbookshops for at least a century.

That milestone has now been reached, and in November the University of California, Berkeley, where the manuscript is in a vault, will release the first volume of Mark Twain's autobiography. The eventual trilogy will run to half a million words, and shed new light on the quintessentially American novelist.

Claude "Butch" Jones would seem an unlikely client for the Innocence Project, a legal foundation that has freed 254 men and women through DNA evidence since 1992. Jones was not, in the broadest sense, an innocent man. He was an alcoholic and an armed robber who once, while serving time in Kansas for murder, doused another inmate with lighter fluid and, in the words of his own defense attorney, "torched him."

When Jones was executed by the state of Texas, however, it wasn't just for being a criminal. It was for a specific crime: the 1989 murder of a liquor-store owner named Allen Hilzendager in a small town with a violent name — Point Blank, Texas. Jones and Danny Dixon, another paroled murderer, had driven to the liquor store in a pickup truck. One of the two men walked inside and shot Hilzendager three times, leaving him dead in a pool of blood and spilled alcohol.

Google said Monday afternoon that upon the request of Ireland's Data Protection Authority, it has deleted private data it collected as part of its Street View application.

In a blog post, the company said that it deleted that information over the weekend in the presence of an independent third party. Google said it is also reaching out to other nations where it also collected data.

The controversy over Google's data collection stems from its announcement Friday that it inadvertently collected private data off of unprotected, or unencrypted, Wi-Fi networks at homes while compiling photos for location-based services.

German officials blasted Google, saying the practice, even if in error, was illegal. California-based Consumer Watchdog filed a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission seeking an investigation on how the practice affected consumers.

"We are reaching out to Data Protection Authorities in the other relevant countries about how to dispose of the remaining data as quickly as possible," wrote Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering and research at Google.

I asked Google whether any nations have requested the company retain data, if only temporarily, to determine what kind of information the search giant collects.

A spokesperson said it is in ongoing discussion with regulators and couldn't comment on what has been discussed. It's unclear how widespread the data collection was. Street View is used in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japan, Taiwan and in several European countries.

	In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, Sen. Chris Dodd (D - Conn.), the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, called for an investigation into the accounting activities used by Lehman Brothers during the financial crisis. Last week, Lehman's bankruptcy examiner issued a scathing report that detailed the firm's use of "Repo 105" transactions to keep debts from being reflected on their balance sheet. The deals were essentially loans that were improperly classified as revenue on Lehman's books. The effect was to remove $50 billion from Lehman's balance sheet -- an act that then CEO Richard Fuld, was "at least grossly negligent" in allowing, the examiner said. Based on Dodd's letter, it seems that NPR was correct in saying that it's a "safe bet" criminal trials are not far off. Here's Dodd's letter: Dear Attorney General Holder: I am deeply concerned about the facts that have come to light regarding the demise of Lehman Brothers and the accounting manipulation that contributed to it. I respectfully ask you to commission a task force to investigate the Lehman situation as well as other companies that may have engaged in similar accounting manipulation with a view to prosecution of employees or agents who contributed to any violations of the law. According to the Report of the U.S. Trustee-appointed Examiner Anton R. Valukas, Lehman presented a misleading picture of its financial condition to the public by using extensive repurchase agreements known as Repo 105 transactions. The Examiner found that "Lehman did not disclose its use - or the significant magnitude of its use - of Repo 105 to the Government, to the rating agencies, to its investors, or to its own Board of Directors." The result was to conceal its holdings of bad assets and to temporarily remove approximately $50 billion of assets from its balance sheet at the end of the first and second quarters of 2008. The Examiner found that Lehman used Repo 105 transactions for no other articulated purpose than to shrink its balance sheet at the quarter-end, in a manner that deceived investors and creditors about its true financial state and misleading others. We must work tirelessly to reduce the incidence of financial fraud in order to restore trust and confidence in the financial markets. A task force investigation and taking appropriate Federal actions in these matters will contribute to these goals. Sincerely, Christopher J. Dodd Chairman

	CONWAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Last week, Sarah Killen had three Twitter followers. This week, she has 20,000 – as well as a new iMac computer and offers to help pay for a dress and drinks for her wedding. The unsuspecting rural Michigan woman has one out-of-work late-night talk show host to thank for her newfound online popularity – Conan O'Brien. O'Brien decided last week to pick Killen as the only person he would follow on Twitter, turning the 19-year-old's life upside down. The deposed "Tonight Show" star whose exit deal with NBC barred him from TV appearances for several months, has taken to Twitter to reach the masses during his exile and has amassed more than a half-million followers. But up until Friday, O'Brien had steadily increased his number of Twitter devotees without following the feeds of anybody else. Enter Killen, who is finishing up her high school requirements, preparing to make the jump to college and getting married in September. "I've decided to follow someone at random," O'Brien's posting read at 3:55 p.m. on Friday. "She likes peanut butter and gummy dinosaurs. Sarah Killen, your life is about to change." Boy, did it ever. Immediately after O'Brien started following her, Killen – whose Twitter handle is "LovelyButton" – picked up followers at a rate of 150 per minute. Then came the calls: Family, friends (actual and long-lost) and interview requests from Web sites, TV shows and radio stations. She sleeps a few hours each night, has fallen woefully behind on her schoolwork and day-to-day activities such as laundry and rarely leaves the house. "It's totally nuts," she said. Until O'Brien plucked Killen from obscurity and turned her into an overnight Web celeb, she and fiance John Slowik Jr. lived a normal life, residing in the basement of a house in Conway Township, more than an hour's drive west from Detroit. It's hard to say exactly what O'Brien's motivation was – O'Brien spokesman Beau Benton had no comment on Wednesday – but it's had a profound effect on Killen and her 21-year-old fiance. The exposure has resulted in a brand-new iMac, which was bought for them by a Florida businessman. A New York designer is donating a wedding dress, and someone else is sending wine for the nuptials. Not bad for a couple who saved $30 for the wedding, hadn't reserved a location and faced the prospect of not being able to afford a wedding dress. "People are saying that I'm asking for gifts and stuff, and I'm not," Killen said. What she is asking of her newfound army of Twitter followers is to contribute to charity, including the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Still, Slowik says he'd love one more thing from the man who used to make them laugh nightly during his abbreviated "Tonight Show" run. Slowik wants O'Brien to be his best man at the wedding. Will he do it? "I would hope so," Killen said.
